There’s a reason that the signature tomato pies from Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana taste extra delicious. Namesake Frank Pepe, the grandfather of the current owners, believed in baking exclusively in a coal-fired oven. That results in the crispy, slightly charred crust for which the pizzeria is known.
It’s now been more than a century since Frank Pepe debuted his original pizza shop right here in New Haven. It’s currently open for takeout and delivery, so you can have one of those piping-hot tomato pies dropped right on your doorstep. The tomato pie features crushed Italian tomatoes, grated pecorino romano, and a drizzle of olive oil. The kitchen team also crafts other specialty pies, such as the spinach, mushroom, and gorgonzola and the white clam pizza. Feel free to build your own pizza, as well, with mozzarella on top and your choice of extras.
